Born in Città di Castello, Italy, Burri initially pursued a career as a physician before his life took a dramatic turn during World War II. Captured by Allied forces, Burri was held as a prisoner of war in Texas, where he discovered his passion for painting. After the war, Burri abandoned medicine and became an influential figure in contemporary art.

Known for his experimental use of unconventional materials, he created abstract artworks using items like burlap, plastic, tar, and metal. His famous series, Sacchi (Sacks), features torn and stitched burlap sacks, while his Combustioni (Combustions) series showcases burned plastic and wood. These works are often associated with the Art Informel movement, which emphasized texture, materiality, and spontaneity.
